Project Linus Blanket Sizes and Guidelines

Adult and child hands holding a red heart together on blue wooden background.

Sizes

The Project Linus Tucson blanket sizes are as follows: for babies, the recommended size is between 36"x36" to 40"x40". For children, the ideal range is from 40"x40" to 50"x60". Teens will need blankets that are no larger than 60"x70". While these sizes are guidelines, it's important to note that the minimum size for a Project Linus Tucson blanket is 36"x36".

DO'S

Crochet or knit.

Weave in all yarn ends on crocheted and knitted blankets. No fringes along the ends of the blanket, as they get tangled in tubes and wires.

Quilt

Secure the batting into outer seams. If the blanket is tied, please anchor it every 4 to 6 inches, cutting ties to 1 inch or less in length. Do not tie with yarn; please use thread or embroidery floss.

No Sew Fleece Blankets

Single layer no-sew blankets are all we need. Be sure the fringes are cut no longer than 4 inches to comply with the requirements of our facilities.

Fabric

Pre-wash all fabric that might cause problems with bleeding and/or shrinking. Use new, clean, washable materials in infant, child, or teen-friendly colors—remember, these blankets are meant to be colorful, cheerful, and cuddly.

Check your blankets carefully for straight and safety pins. It is better you find them and not the child, ensuring safety for our children.

Don't

When creating a blanket for Project Linus, be mindful of the materials you choose. Avoid making your blankets out of wool or wool blend yarns, as these may cause an allergic reaction. Additionally, steer clear of yarns that have metallic threads and refrain from attaching buttons or decorative items, which can be a choking hazard. Only use permanent fabric markers made specifically for fabric, as Sharpies or decorative markers are not suitable for this purpose. It's important to use fabric that has not been stored in damp areas with a musty smell, since mold spores may cause allergic reactions in children and are very difficult to remove from material. Also, avoid using perfumed or fragrance products, including fabric softeners, detergents, softener sheets, plastic bags, and body perfumes, as these can raise allergy concerns. Lastly, ensure that the blankets are not exposed to pets or smoke to maintain their quality.

Please Note

Blankets that smell of smoke or strong chemicals, or are covered in pet hair or fur, cannot be accepted by Project Linus. Washing may not remove all of these factors, so please use a lint brush or roller on blankets that have lint or threads. Remember to thoroughly check your blankets for pins—double or even triple check to ensure safety. BE CREATIVE! It's important to keep in mind that children need blankets, in various sizes, to cuddle and find comfort from.

Donations of fabrics and materials are accepted, with nothing smaller than a fat quarter. Donations of yarns are also welcome, particularly acrylic 4-ply yarn, which is ideal for our blankets. Additionally, both polyester and cotton batting are accepted.
